The Kingdom of Dahomey

The circle with the small dots indicates the approximate boundaries of the Kingdom at its maximum. As you can see, it was only a small portion of the colony of Dahomey (now the Benin Republic) created by the French. With French assistance, the small kingdom of Porto Novo in the south east was able to resist conquest and incorporation into the Kingdom of Dahomey. However, as a client state of the French, Porto Novo provided the base for the French conquest of the Kingdom of Dahomey and the rest of what became the French colony of Dahomey in the 1890s.
