de Saussure, Ferdinand The linguist who, at the turn of the 20th century, shifted the focus of linguistic studies from historical searches for language origins and historical relationships to the scientific study of language structure.
Design Features of Communication See ANT 202 Overhead of this concept. The characteristics of various communication systems employed by humans and other animals. Developed by Charles Hockett to highlight the distinctions between human and non-human communication.
Dialect A variant in either the phonemic, morphemic, or syntactic aspects of a language. The most common dialects are those based on region, but they may also develop within communities based upon ethnicity, age, gender, class, etc.
Duolocal A residence pattern in which spouses do not share a household.
