Acculturation The processes of cultural transmission to individuals who have been enculturated in another culture. See also, enculturation.
Acephalous A term used to describe societies which are egalitarian with respect to their political structure. In such societies, every person capable of being a leader can do so; there are no permanent positions of headship.
Adaptation The processes by which living organisms either alter themselves or their environments inorder to enhance the potential for survival in particular environments. All living organisms are subject to biological adaptation through the processes of natural selection. However, social animals have the additional mechanism of learning adaptive behaviours which in humans is manifested by the presence of culture.
Adumbration As used by Edward T. Hall, it refers to the foreshadowing of a verbal message by such things as gestures employed by speakers, the dress of speakers, the environment in which the message is delivered, etc.; that is, anything which may "set the stage" for a verbal message and which may influence the meaning attached to the message by the listener.
Agnatic Kin who are related through male links.
Ambilocal A residence pattern in which a newly married couple may reside with, or near, the wife's parents, or, with, or near, the husband's parents. This is not to be confused with neolocal in which the newly married couple sets up a household without reference to the households of any other kinsperson.
Ancestor Focused Descent Groups Descent groups which are defined by reference to a relative in a senior generation to a given member (that is, to an "ego"). These are always corporate and usually unilineal. It is in contrast to egocentric descent groups.
Anthropology The study of all people, at all times, in all places. The term for the holistic study of humankind.
Anthropological Linguistics The study of the relationship between communication
systems (pricipally language) employed by people and the cultures in which they live.
Artefact A humanly modified aspect of the environment. It usually refers to objects that are made
by people but the concept also incorporates farmed land, fishing weirs, etc.
Archaeology The study of the culture and society of extinct populations through the detailed
study of the artefacts produced by members of the society.
Authority A form of political leadership in which the leader gets others to do his/her will by convincing them of the rightness of his/her opinions, reputation for good decisions, prestige, and other non-coercive techniques. Rhetorical skill is frequently associated with such leaders.
Avunculocal Residence A residence pattern in which a newly married couple lives in, or near, the husband's mother's brother's household.
