Language A form of vocal communication distinctive of human speech. It possesses all sixteen of the design features of communication systems identified by Charles Hockett in his comparison of human and non-human communication.
Linguistics The formal study of language and human communication. Since the beginning of the 20th century much of the study has been dominated by structural linguistics which focuses upon the rules of language production. Of special significance is the study of sounds (phonology), forms (mophology), and sequence (syntax) although other aspects are studied as well (e.g., the study of meaning -- semanitics).
