Filiation A term used to refer to the assignment of children to membership in a descent group.
Formalist A term which refers to a theoretical perspective in economic anthropology which argues that concepts derived from the study of market economies are universally applicable to further an understanding of economic behaviour. The presumption is that cross cultural comparisons are not possible unless there is a set of universally applicable concepts. There position is in contrast to that of the substantivists.
Frame of Reference A concept which refers to the perspective from which explanation of phenomena takes place. While there are certainly observations which are meaningful, and some which are meaningfully unique, that can be made from within a particular culture, there clearly are others which can only be made by an observer from another culture. This cross-cultural perspective is the hallmark of an anthropological approach.
Free Morpheme A unit of linguistic structure which has meaning independently of other units. See also, bound morpheme.
