MIDTERM TAKE HOME ESSAY

Due Tuesday, October 23rd.  

This research essay constitutes the first part of the research project.  Keep this in mind when you choose a social movement on which to focus. 

1.      Selection of social movement:  Choose a current social movement that is occurring on a national or state or local level.  Provide reasons for your choice in your essay in an introduction. 

2.      Description of social movement: 

a)      Describe this social movement in detail, its history and current incarnations (if any), covering aspects of structure, issues of concerns, strategies & actions, membership, funding, public support, etc...  Be sure to explain why this is a social movement in sociological terms. 

b)      Describe what social change is being sought by the social movement.  Explain this in terms of social change models. 

c)      Describe this social movement in terms of two of the social movement theories.  Contrast these two explanations, and provide arguments to support which theory you believe best explains the movement. 

d)      Explain why/why not this is a nonviolent social movement.
