JOURNALS

Journal #1
Using the Nonviolence Model of Power described in class, list as many experiences/situations you can think of which you experienced in your own life each of the three types of power: power over, power with, power within.  After you have done this, reflect upon what this tells you about 1) you and power, and 2) society and power, in terms of this model.
Journal #2

Using the US social class characteristics outlined in class (or refer to my webpage hosting.uaa.alaska.edu/afewv, class characteristics page), describe in DETAIL your social class background while growing up.  Identify what social class you/your family fell in.

Reflection:  after this description comment on/reflect upon what opportunities you did or did not have because of the social class you found yourself in.

Then project into the future:  what do you hope will be your social class and what can you realistically expect your social class to be, explain, i.e. idealistically and realistically describe your future social class.

(For students older and already having established families themselves, describe your social class growing up and then compare it to your social class today)

Journal #3
Reflect in DETAIL on how media has affected your life.  Consider many different types of media from the numerous print to audiovisual types (e.g. newspapers, TV, radio, music, videos, films, magazines, books, advertizing, billboards and other notices, internet, etc...).  Consider various aspects of your life and how each type of media affected each aspect of your life, i.e. the impact of media on you as student, worker, peer, consumer, etc...  Do not provide your general comments on media, nor simply refer to 'the media'.
Journal #4
How gendered was your upbringing, i.e. describe in DETAIL your upbringing in terms of gender.  Consider and discuss various socialization factors, e.g. family, friends, school, work, media, etc...  Consider and discuss various aspects of your life from toys, sports, clothing, leisure activities, career and study choices, activities with either/both parents, relationship interests/attractions, etc...  How has this manifested itself in you today?  Also discuss what were your gender role models as you grew up.
Journal #5

1.  What does it mean to be your race/ethnicity?  Use the racial or ethnic group you have identified for most of your life.  2.  Consider MANY ways in which you have been hurt by racism and how you have benefited from racism.  Consider direct and indirect hurts and benefits.

In all these questions, focus on the individual level but also on an institutional level.

Journal #6 - extra credit

What does peace mean to you?  What are representations of peace in your life?  Explore the concept of peace at various levels from the individual to the global.  Do you feel the institution of the military supports or hinders your beliefs about what peace means to you?  Consider this in terms of the individuals who comprise the military as well as those individuals who make decisions which affect the military, i.e. from the soldier to the commander in chief of the military.
