| Journal #1 - Deviance and conformity | |
Part 1: Write your own Criminality/Deviancy autobiography, i.e. describe the ways in which you have engaged in deviant/criminal acts. Start as far back as you can remember...including the most trivial of things to the most serious...bringing yourself up to the now. Explore why you engaged in such acts. Do you see any patterns in your life? Which, if any, are the first you've actually told anybody? Reflect on what you have written - how do you feel and what do you think? Part 2: Describe the many ways in which you conform. Again consider this throughout your life until now. Explore why it is you conform. Why is it you obey? Remember to be detailed in your responses. Continually ask in the reflection components of parts 1 & 2, why, why, why…

| Journal #2 - Gender | |
Part 1: How gendered was your upbringing? Describe in DETAIL your upbringing in terms of gender. Consider and discuss various socialization factors, e.g. family, friends, school (teachers and classmates), work colleagues, media, religion, etc... Consider and discuss various aspects of your life from toys, sports, chores assigned, clothing, leisure activities, jobs, career and study choices, activities with either/both parents, relationship interests/attractions, etc... Also consider the gender dimension to what deviant/criminal activities you engaged in, drawing upon journal #1. Part 2: Reflect on what this tells you about yourself and you who are, and on what opportunities you did/did not have. Also discuss examples of when you have either been subject to or perpetrated or been witness to prejudice and discrimination in terms of gender (i.e. sexism). Reflect on what were the FEELINGS, i.e. emotions, which came up as a result of these experiences. |
| Journal #3 - Race and ethnicity | |
Part 1: Exploring your race and ethnicity What does it mean to be ____________ (your race)? Fill in the blank, e.g. White, Black, etc... What does it mean to be ____________ (your ethnicity)? Fill in the blank, e.g. German Canadian, French Canadian, etc... Consider both questions not only in terms of you as an individual, on a personal level, but also in terms of you being a member of the larger group, e.g. member of _____ race and ______ ethnic population group. Consider your race and ethnicity in terms of various institutional settings, e.g. employment, education, politics, community, cultural/social settings, etc… Think of this in terms as you were growing up as well as now and considering your future. Refer to the white privilege exercise section on my website for ideas to consider the above. Part 2: Exploring prejudice and discrimination Discuss examples of when you have either been subject to, or perpetrated, or been witness to, prejudice and discrimination in terms of race and ethnicity (i.e. not gender or other types of discrimination). Reflect on what were the feelings, i.e. emotions, which came up as a result of these experiences. Consider how often prejudice and discrimination are not considered deviant. Do you agree/disagree? |
| Journal #4 | |
Part 1 Outline all the ways you contribute to the global and Canadian economy – follow the money trail backwards and forwards for all that you consume. How are your decisions and actions actually facilitating corporate crime? E.g. if you are someone who purchases name brand clothing, you may actually be supporting a company which uses sweatshop labour to make the clothes you wear. Part 2 From this week’s reading, the author quotes Reiman: “If we acknowledge the degree to which our economic and social institutions themselves breed poverty, we would have to recognize our own responsibility towards the poor” (p. 285). What are your thoughts on this, focusing on your responsibility, not responsibility of people in general, and considering your answer to part 1? From what you have learned, how will this influence what you now do in your life. |
