CRIMINALIZATION OF DISSENT

COURSE DOCUMENTS

Announcements/Notices:

-  In case of snow and possible school closure or class cancellation, call me (phone number is on the syllabus) where there will be a voicemail message or possibly check my website - however in this latter case, if SMU is experiencing a power failure, the servers would be down and I would not be able to access my website myself, so phoning is your best bet to determine if class will take place.

-  As of January 22nd, there will be on reserve in the library copies of a collection of articles that I have downloaded from the internet, discussing various recent and current situations of people being criminalized for their dissent, discussing various protest locally and globally, commentary on these issues, etc...

-  During the class of January 22nd, the same SMAC liaison people will be attending to work with your groups and on the campaigns of SMAC.  There will be at least one hour for you to meet with your project group in the 2nd half of the class

-  Most of the project groups already have meetings to attend beginning the week of Monday January 19th, and actions that are being organized around for events in February and March.  It is imperative that the members of the project groups make every effort to attend these meetings as this is a requirement for this group project.

Course syllabus - IT IS CRUCIAL THAT YOU ATTEND THE FIRST CLASS, if not then please drop the course to save yourself and myself wasted time and energy

NOTE:  Addition to syllabus - course outline section:  2 discussion questions are to be submitted each time there are readings assigned for the week.  Readings are assigned  9 different weeks so you are to submit in total 9 sets of discussion questions.  The first submission of discussion questions, 2 questions, is due January 15th.

Addendum to group project written component:  In part 4, you must also provide commentary discussing ways the organizations/social movements seeking social change can minimize being criminalized for their views/actions, suggestions for the group themselves but also how does society need to change so that the dissent is not criminalized.

Contact information form - print this off and complete and submit during the class of January 15th.
