Buddhist Cave Art
(This page under construction)
The Yungang ("Cloud Ridge") Caves (Yungang Shiku) are located sixteen kilometers west of the cityof Datong, Shanxi Province, a city that lies about seven hours northwest of Beijing by express train. The caves stretch about a kilometer and contain more than 50,000 statues. There are several other sights in China famous for their Buddhist cave art, such as those at Dazu, Dunhuang, and Longmen. There are also many large statues of Buddhas, perhaps the largest being that at Leshan. (I have taken pictures at many of these locations and will attempt to get some of them on the web soon.)
