Research
Albert J. Mills' research activities center on the impact of organization
upon people, focussing on organizational change and human liberation. Specifically he
is interested in issues of organizational culture and gender, organizational change, critical
approaches to management; and employment equity.
He has recently completed a three-year programme of SSHRC-funded research
into -
"Gender and change in the Canadian airline industry: a comparative study of Air
Canada and Canadi>n over time." The objective of the study was to further our
understanding of how organizational culture contributes to gendered organizational
processes and practices, and how those practices are maintained and change over
time. The research was undertaken in collaboration with Jean Helms Mills
(Department of Management, SMU). He is now in the final
year of a SSHRC-funded programme that is looking at
"The gendering of
organizational culture over time: Case studies of selected US airlines"
(also with Jean Helms Mills).
He has recently complete a book on "Sex,
Strategy and the Stratosphere: the Gendering of British Airways, 1919-1991",
and is engaged in research on a variety of topics, including organizations
and identity work; Bakhtin and management theory; power and
resistance; management theory in the cold war context; gender and
organizational change; legitimacy and the AACSB.
He is currently the co-program chair of the
Academy of Management Critical Management Studies Interest group for the
